The bed is the most important feature in any bedroom because, let’s be honest here-that’s where all the action takes place!
I like the idea of a customized upholstered headboard as an alternative to a wood and metal bed. They add softness to a bedroom and an opportunity to bring in color, texture and fabric to personalize the space. Using just a headboard is relatively inexpensive and the bed is so easy to make that there’s no excuse for your bedroom to lose that “come hither” look, every evening.
There are so many shapes and styles of headboards to choose from and infinite permutations on a theme. Straight edged or curvey, contemporary or traditional – tufting, nailheads, channeling and welting are just a few of the additions that can add drama to any basic shape. And, don’t be afraid to customize – a good upholsterer can do anything you want and a gorgeous headboard will really give you the most “bang for the buck” in your beaudoir! When I decorate I like to start with the floor, and in the bedroom, the bed and headboard always follow. However, in my own bedroom, the headboard came last, because much of my other furniture had been handed down to me. To finish the room, I used a neutral textured fabric, complementing a deep eggplant area rug and decorative yellow bombay chests. Large floral nailheads and thick welting around the border add lustrous texture and an air of sophistication – enabling the new headboard to stand up to the other furnishings already in place!
And so, when it comes to bedroom design, be creative and experiment. Ooh La La!
