If you haven’t heard of it, (and no one living within 5 miles of this institution has not) the Black Cow is really considered the epicenter of Croton-on-Hudson.
While there is a branch office in Pleasantville, the buzz both around this place is really unique. Besides having really good coffee (and all of its iterations) and pastries, the Black Cow is a hub of activity. “Meet me at The Cow” is what we all tell each other when we want to have a talk. Decorated in the “shabby chic” style (and definitely not on purpose) this place feels like your living room. During Hurricane Sandy, the Cow actually served as a living room/office for those who lost power because of their generator and their wi-fi. Definitely a life saver!
On any given day, I have walked in on knitting clubs in progress, book groups and a few mah jong games. I actually stopped to play a few rounds with these women, who were actively trying to recruit and “fourth”. Children’s books line the shelves and local artists are featured on the walls. Not far from the Montrose VA, veterans of all stripes, wearing their hats and their medals, often congregate to shoot the breeze. Everyone of every age feels welcome and at home.
Owner and Founder Michael Grant, opened the Black Cow in a different location in 1995. The wafting of good beans and the vibe that the place exudes, filled it to the brim every day – so in 2012, the Black Cow moved to it’s present location at 4 Old Post Road South.
So, if you are in the neighborhood and you’re itching for a mocha latte and a domino game, make sure that you stop off at The Black Cow – it never disappoints.
